Who's the real winner? What's going to happen to Taufik? Plans for him are sketchy, but Sylvester's are more concreteIdol surpriseRecording contract for SylvesterNo World Idol for Taufik? By Wendy Teo YES, Taufik Batisah is our first Singapore Idol. But who will be the long-term winner of a competition that had gripped the nation's attention for the past six months?Last night's final at the Indoor Stadium threw up more questions than answers.Taufik, 23, may have won a one-year recording contract with Sony-BMG and three-year
management contract with Hype Records' Artiste Networks. But Sylvester Sim, 21, is not losing out on anything as the runner-up.At the post-final press conference, it was announced that Sylvester will also be getting a one-year contract with Sony-BMG, on top of the three-year
management contract with Artiste Networks that was part of the runner-up prize.Which means that both finalists are going
home with the same booty. So what makes Taufik the winner over Sylvester?A mere title?More bad
news was in store for Taufik: He's unlikely to get the chance to showcase his talents at World Idol, a contest featuring the individual winners from different countries. The winner was stunned at the post-final party to learn this. The New Paper had found out from industry sources that World Idol had been scrapped and this was later confirmed by Channel 5. So, what's going to happen to Taufik after Singapore Idol?Plans for his
music career are still sketchy, with both Taufik and Sony-BMG saying that further discussions and planning were needed. On the other hand, Sylvester's pop
career looks more certain - it has already been more or less mapped out.Sylvester, just as he had hoped, will be going the Mandopop route.Sony-BMG managing director Kelly Chew had said at the press conference: 'After hearing him sing Jay Chou's An Jing, it's a no-brainer.'Taufik fan Desmond Charles, 26, a bikini designer and wholesaler, feels that it's unfair.'They should still spend more
money on the winner, to make it more worthwhile for him. Maybe offer him a contract with MediaCorp or something? If not, what's the point of a competition if it's the same prize (for the winner and runner-up)?'But Sylvester fan Valerie Sum, 18, student, who was disappointed initially that Sylvester didn't win, squealed in delight and said: 'Ooh, I'm looking forward to it!'At the post-event celebrations, Sylvester told The New Paper that he didn't know anything about a recording contract for the runner-up until the press conference. And he insists that 'there's no difference between us, we are both there already'.Even before the final, industry experts had forecast a brighter future for Sylvester because of his Ah Beng appeal and Mandopop platform that could propel him beyond our shores. But Taufik seems anxious to set himself apart. He said: 'As MediaCorp said, they'll focus more on me than Sylvester.'WINNING MARGIN? Then, there's the question that everybody wants to know the answer to?It's long been touted as a tough fight, so by how many votes exactly did Taufik beat Sylvester? Was it a landslide victory, a respectable margin, or was it by a hair's breadth? It seems we will never know.At the press conference, Ms Selena Ho, vice-president of MediaCorp TV's Channel 5, declined to reveal what the voting percentages were like, saying that it was not their practice.Throughout the competition, MediaCorp had never revealed the number of votes for each contestant. What was revealed last night was that some 3 million votes were cast over the entire season. And last night alone, 1.1 million votes were cast in the two-hour voting period. In contrast, things are relatively transparent with American Idol. When Ruben Studdard beat Clay Aiken in American Idol 2 last year, the winning difference was revealed to be 130,000 votes. This year, in the showdown between Fantasia Barrino and Diana DeGarmo, American Idol
host Ryan Seacrest had also revealed to mtv.com that Barrino had won by a mere margin of less than 2 per cent out of the 65 million votes cast.Mr Charles, who says he voted non-stop for Taufik last night, wishes MediaCorp will be more transparent. He said: 'I've always been bothered by the fact that they don't reveal the number of votes. We wouldn't know if the competition is rigged, would we? But though I find it disturbing, I have also got used to it by now.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Fans' surprise: Sly's fans show up in pink PINK for Sylvester Sim.And white for Taufik Batisah. That appeared to be the 'dress code' for last night's Singapore Idol finale at the Indoor Stadium, as fans turned up in the corresponding colours of their idols.Apparently, the 'dress code' rules were spread through postings on the Singapore Idol forum and the Sly and Taufik fansites.Sylvester's younger sister Sandra, told The New Paper: 'He was the one who wanted his fans to wear pink, so that he can identify them. His favourite colour is actually black, but he chose pink because it's a very striking colour.'His
family had also prepared whistles and
photos to give away to Sylvester fans. But the most eye-catching award should still go to the five Taufik brides, who came in veils and with
flowers in their
hair. One Taufik fan, Mr Desmond Charles, 26, shaved Taufik's name on the side of his mohawk. He said: 'It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, I only did it this afternoon. I wanted something that I can walk around with for the next week, and tell
people I'm supporting Taufik. I sacrificed my
hair for him, so he'd better win.'Some hard-core idol fans turned up as early as 7am, and when the idols made their entrance about 12 hours later, there was pandemonium. Some fans just couldn't get close enough to their idols.Girls screamed for the much-ostracised Jerry Ong, then wept hysterically when he was whisked away. But all was forgotten the moment the next batch of celebrities arrived on the red carpet. Yes, fame and idol adulation can be fleeting.
